Hatch Chart
Paraleptophlebia adoptiva nymphs habitat consists of medium flowing currents. Hatches
begin early in the spring, and may coincide with Baetis, Epeorus pleuralis, and Ephemerella
subvaria. It's well worth taking a close look to see exactly what the fish are feeding on during
these hatches. During a subvaria hatch on a stream with a great deal of fishing preasure trout
will turn to feeding on these less obvious insects instead of the larger Ephemerella subvaria.
Early in the season great numbers of adoptiva spinners have been observed flying over the water,
but as the sun moves off the water they follow it falling in a nearby field, or woods instead of the water.
Mature nymph species identification - Paraleptophlebia adoptiva, gills of abdominal segments 3 - 5 with numerous, prominent, lateral branches, gills of abdominal segments 3 - 5 divided at a point about one half distance from base to apex of gill. Lestage 1917, Ulmer 1920, Burks - The Mayflies, or Ephemeroptera, of Illinois - 1909 reprinted 1953
